Uganda Youth Skills Training Organization

We are a team of people committed to equip youth in Uganda with hands on skills for their everyday life. We believe that personal development and education are the way to end poverty and we are advocating this and a better future for youth in Uganda through all the activities and projects we do.
In accordance with the national need of vocational training for economic development, and the way it has been seen by society in the past few years, our aim is to inform, educate and train youth in Uganda. We aim at facilitating a belief that vocational training will offer youth the chance to secure jobs faster, to be self-reliant, establish their own business and in turn, commit to a more systemised change in Uganda, starting from youth who believe, who can, and who do.
Through our projects and partnerships, we are addressing some of the current challenges within the Millennium Development Goals, such as:
- Eradicating Extreme Poverty
- Promote Gender Equality and empower women
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
- Ensure Environmental Sustainability
At the core of our work, it is a partnership for sustainable development, which is based on 3 directions:
- Creating an infrastructure of vocational training within the Ugandan Educational system
- Facilitating access to vocational training by providing training to youth outside school
- Increasing international awareness and collaborating with companies and organizations that want to invest in training for youth in Uganda.
Uganda Youth skills Training Organization (UYSTO) was established by Bob Maahe, who through his struggle to create his own employment started by using metal wastes to make his own carpentry tools. He was able to make tools like chisels, wooden planes, spoke shaves, etc. He could be able to acquire small contracts from people in communities who would admire his carpentry work. With time, Bob Maahe decided to advance with his education using the money he had now collected and saved for fulfilling his future plans, while at the polytechnic he shared this idea with his classmates, seven civil Engineering students who were able to understand him and decided to take up the initiative.
The organization was later joined by other 2 technicians and 5 teachers outside the polytechnic; these thought that this would be a great idea for young people to acquire hands on skills opportunities that would enhance employment in their communities.
The organization started with a few handmade tools, one sewing machine donated by one of the teachers, Esther Kakembo, and 2 young people training at the community center, and 1 school with 50 trainees, now with modern training tools and over 20 young people at the center and 2 schools with over 400 young people annually.
We partner for sustainable growth in Uganda & training youth for better opportunities, is our priority.
